Have your say on the regeneration of Sandwell’s canal district!

Sandwell Council is holding a public consultation on the Smethwick to Birmingham Regeneration Corridor Area Framework and Grove Lane Masterplan. The plan, which is a collaboration between Sandwell Council, Birmingham City Council, WMCA and Homes England, will be open for public consultation until Friday 26 November. The area around Grove Lane will see significant change with the introduction of the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital due to open in 2023. The area surrounding the hospital has been identified for regeneration for some time and the Area Framework will assist us in bringing forward further transformational regeneration to this area. The Smethwick to Birmingham corridor is Birmingham and Sandwell’s historic canal district. It is the historic link between Birmingham and the Black Country and a cradle of the industrial revolution. The corridor is one of the most significant areas of brownfield urban renewal in Europe, with the potential to deliver 4,000 new homes. The plan aims to realise the opportunities of that transformational scale of change. Change is already under way with new neighbourhoods under construction at Port Loop and Soho Loop and the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital nearing completion. The plan aims to continue those changes and ensure they enhance the area for existing and future residents and make it a healthy sustainable place to live, work and visit. The plan creates a vision for the area to be used in the detailed design and development of the main redevelopment sites in the corridor. It also provides a joined-up transport strategy for the corridor, which will be used by the councils and Transport for West Midlands to create and seek funding for a corridor-wide package of transport improvements focused on walking and cycling. Councillor Iqbal Padda, cabinet member for regeneration and growth at Sandwell Council said: “I would urge everyone to look at these plans and give us their feedback before the deadline of Friday 26 November. “This is one of the most significant areas of brownfield urban renewal in Europe and regeneration is needed to enhance this historic link between Birmingham and the Black Country for future generations. ” Details of the consultation and how to take part are available at https://www.smethwicktobirminghamcorridor.com/ |
